8th Annual Yadkin Valley, NC Wine Festival

The 8th annual Yadkin Valley Wine Festival was held at Elkin Municipal Park in Elkin, NC, on May 16th, 2009.  Participating were over 20 wineries which are all located in the Yadkin Valley, NC appellation.  Some of the wineries participating are so new that they have  not yet been listed in the brochures that have been printed for 2009.  The Yadkin Valley was the first named and approved appellation in North Carolina.

While the prediction was for 60% chance of rain, the day was beautiful most of the day, with light rain just starting in the last half hour of the festival time.   The crowd was good and, as always has been the case in the past, one of the best groups of wine lovers I have seen at any festival.  They were moderate, well behaved, and very interested in learning about and tasting new wines.  This is my favorite wine festival, by far, for that very reason.

The really nice thing about this festival is that it is free to those not tasting wine.  For those folks, there is music, many arts and crafts booths and exhibits, food booths, and a nice place to socialize.  So, if your group is mixed in that some don't drink, or there are children, there is no fee for them to come with you.  It is a very good deal indeed. If you are tasting wine, the fee this year was $16 in advance and $20 at the gate.  This is a great value for the many and varied wines you are able to sample.

This festival is always in May and is usually scheduled for the Sunday after Mother's Day.  You can check the website at www.yvwf.com for dates and information.

Plan on joining us for the next one!

  2. Linda - It was great to see you and Tom at the festival this year, and I agree about the great turnout and overall ambiance of this festival in particular.

Just a quick comment about the festival dates. The Yadkin Valley Wine Festival date is held on the third Saturday in May at Elkin Municipal Park. A list of the wineries, music, food and crafts can be found at the festival website at yvwf.com, and includes pictures from prior year festivals.

Hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day!
